The marathon course has a few gently rolling hills, but most of the course is flat. After starting in front of the Nauvoo Temple, the first two miles are run through the streets of Old Nauvoo. You will run past several historical sites including, the Cultural Hall, the Browning Gunsmith Shop, the Post Office, Print Shop, Blacksmith Shop, Brigham Young Home, and Joseph Smith's House and Mansion House. The remainder of the first half of the marathon is run along the scenic Mississippi River. Approaching the city of Hamilton, the runners will turn East and run through the rural roads of Hancock County as they head towards the city of Carthage. After a mile of rolling hills heading North on 800E, the runners will turn directly East on 1550E. From there the roads are nearly all flat for the remainder of the course. Arriving in Carthage the runners will run about a mile and then finish on S. Fayette Street directly in front of Carthage Jail. (click here for course maps).

All full marathoners should park at the finish line in Carthage. (Locations for parking will be given in the "Runner's Guide" posted on May 15th and available at the Expo.) A shuttle service will be provided when you park in Carthage that will bring you to the starting line in Nauvoo.
All full marathon participants who are unable to maintain the required 14:53-minute-mile pace will be redirected to the half marathon finish line. Since the State of Illinois does not yield right-of-way to pedestrians it is strongly encouraged that you don't try to continue running on a reopened road. Anyone who reaches the 12 mile marker in more than a 14:53-minute-mile pace (2:58:36 time) will be directed to the half marathon finish line and be required to finish their run at that time.
Full marathon participants must sign a waiver during the registration process agreeing to maintain the required 14:53-minute-mile-pace to complete the marathon in 6 1/2 hours or less.
The "Road to Carthage Marathon" is a USATF certified course and is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Click here to learn the current Boston qualifying times.
Every marathon participant will receive a beautiful, top-quality, long-sleeve finisher's t-shirt. Shirts and registration packet must be picked up at the check in on Friday, May 25 from 10:00 am and 7:00 pm. Location: State Park.
Bib Numbers/Timing Tag
To ensure an accurate time, race bibs must be clearly visible on the front of the torso and not covered by outer apparel, unaltered and unmodified (do not fold or wrinkle) and pinned in all four corners. Please note that bib numbers will not be mailed out. They must be picked up in person at the registration booth, at the tent in the State Park. Be prepared to show your photo ID to claim your bib number. Bib numbers are nontransferable and irreplaceable if lost, and entry fees are nonrefundable.
Can't pick up your bib number and race shirt at the Expo?
Not to worry! You have a couple options.
1) You can either have someone else pick up your bib number and race shirt for you at the expo. If someone else is going to pick up your goods, they must come with a photocopy or picture of your ID on their phone - no exceptions.
2) If you cannot make it during the regular Expo hours, you will also be able to pick them up until 12:00 PM at the Marathon Headquarters Hotel in the front lobby.
3) If you are unable to pick up your bib number and timing tag before race day, you must select the Race Day Pickup option and pay an additional $20 convenience fee when registering. If you've already registered and want to add the convenience fee, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to pay by credit card at least 48 hours in advance of the expo. Otherwise you can just pay the $20 by cash on race morning.
Race Day Gear Check
A plastic bag will be provided during registration that must be used and provided at a check-in area near the starting line. You must label these bags with your name to ensure their identity at the finish line area. These bags will be transferred to the finish line and available at the end of your run. A picture ID is required at the time of pickup.
As a safety precaution, backpacks and duffle bags will not be accepted. Do not check any valuables and keep in mind we are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Bags may be claimed after your race. Do not discard gear at the start line. All items left at the start line, on the course or not claimed on race day will be donated to local charities.
Water Stations/Course Support
Keep yourself hydrated! Fully staffed and equipped water stations will be positioned along the course approximately every 2 miles with plenty of water and replenisher liquid. Aid stations will be available at mile markers: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24.
Please help us keep the course clean, by using the provided trash boxes near the aid stations and along the course. This will ensure that this event continues for years to come.
Porta-potties will be available at every relay point on the course (approximately every 5 miles).
Medical resources will be available at each finish line: Half Marathon and Full Marathon finish lines.
Driving Directions to Event (More information posted soon)
The Road to Carthage marathon run will take place rain or shine. If conditions make it unsafe or impossible to have the event, our intent would be to refund entry fees as long as the cancelled event was covered by insurance, otherwise we will transfer your fee to the following year. Our hope is that the weather or any other unforeseen conditions, won’t prevent us from running.
Consistent with the marathon running industry standard, all entry fees are NON-refundable and cannot be deferred toward a future event. Bib numbers are NON- transferable. The selling and/or giving away of a Carthage Marathon bib number is not allowed and will result in disqualification of both the original bib owner and the runner using the bib number. Both runners will be prohibited from participation in the Carthage Marathon for a minimum of two years.
In recognition of their accomplishment, all full marathon finishers will receive a beautiful medal after completing the marathon. In addition, age group awards are also given.
Awards will be offered to the first three finishers, male and female, in the following age groups: 17 & under, 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80+.
Awards will be given during the post race party, located at the LDS Pageant Building.
If you’re unable to pick up your award on race day, here are two other ways to receive it:
- Pick it up at the Marathon Headquarters (Nauvoo Family Inn and Suites Hotel) through Monday, May 28th.
- After May 28th your award will have to be shipped to you. You must pay the shipping charge of $10.00. You can either call us to pay by credit card or send a check payable to Sports In Motion, LLC, mailed to 405 37th Street Place, Sioux City, Iowa 51104.
Please note: age group awards will be based on net chip time and prize money will be based on clock time.
Athletes who participate in this competition are subject to formal drug testing in accordance with USA Track and Field and IAAF Rule 55. Athletes found positive for banned substances, or who refuse the test will be disqualified from this event and will be ineligible for future competitions. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications contain banned substances. Call the USO Drug Hotline at 800/233-0393 for information regarding drugs and for testing.
