2-5 PERSON MARATHON RELAY INFORMATION
Saturday, May 27th
Start Time: 6:00 a.m.*
*The marathon relay teams will start at the same time and location as the full and half marathon runners.
With the new option of registering 2, 3, 4, or 5 member team relay, you can chose which of the 4 relay points each runner will switch off. When you register you will have to confirm at the registration desk which relay points you have selected for each team member. They must do the transfer at the appointed relay points.
Relay teams will run the exact same course as the full marathoners. There are 4 relay points:
1 - Hammas Park (4.9 mile marker) 2nd team member will run a total of 6 miles to the next exchange point.
2 - Hoot Owl Park (10.9 mile marker) 3rd team member will run 5.1 miles to next exchange point.
3 - Gun Club near the intersection of 1550 and Connable Road (16 mile marker) 4th team member will run 5 miles to exchange point.
4. - Near RR tracks on 1500 (21 mile marker) Final team member will run 5.2 miles to the finish line.
The first leg of the relay starts at the temple and runs for Two miles through Old Nauvoo and then heads out on the Illinois State Hwy 96. This runner will finish their leg by running 2.9 miles on the Hwy 96, which is mostly flat before handing off at Hammas Park.
The second leg of the relay is entirely run on Illinois State Hwy 96, which has a few gentle rolling hills. It is the longest leg of the relay run.
The third leg continues on Hwy 96 and then turns East on County Road 1430 (which turns into 800E) and turns right when reaching 1550E. This runner will encounter several gentle hills throughout most of the first 3 miles of their run. Once turning onto 1550E the road is mostly flat. Most of their run on the 1550E will be completed on a packed dirt road.
The fourth leg continues on 1550E until it dead ends at 1300E. Then the runners will turn right on 1300E. And shortly after will make another turn to the left and continue until they cross the RR tracks. This portion of the course is flat and fast. This entire section will be run on a packed dirt surface.
The final leg of the run is all on paved roads and is flat and fast. The runners will run directly into Carthage on 1500E and cross Buchanan Street onto West Street. Once reaching Main Street the runners will turn left, and run three blocks on Main Street. Once they reach S. Fayette Street, they make their last turn, turning left, finishing two blocks later directly in front of Carthage Jail.

Bib Numbers/Timing Tag
EACH relay participant will receive a race bib. To ensure an accurate time, race bibs must be clearly visible on the front of the torso and not covered by outer apparel, unaltered and unmodified (do not fold or wrinkle) and pinned in all four corners. Please note that bib numbers will not be mailed out. They must be picked up in person at the registration booth. (Location TBD). Be prepared to show your photo ID to claim your bib number. Bib numbers are nontransferable and irreplaceable if lost, and entry fees are nonrefundable. Only ONE relay member needs to be present to pickup race packet.
Can't pick up your bib number and race shirt at the Expo?
Not to worry! You have a couple options.
1) You can either have someone else pick up your bib number and race shirt for you at the expo. If someone else is going to pick up your goods, they must come with a photocopy or picture of your ID on their phone - no exceptions.
2) If you cannot make it during the regular Expo hours, you will also be able to pick them up until 12:00 PM at the Marathon Headquarters Hotel in the front lobby.
3) If you are unable to pick up your bib number and timing tag before race day, you must select the Race Day Pickup option and pay an additional $20 convenience fee when registering. If you've already registered and want to add the convenience fee, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to pay by credit card at least 48 hours in advance of the expo. Otherwise you can just pay the $20 by cash on race morning.
Race Day Gear Check
A plastic bag will be provided for each relay member during registration that must be used and provided at a check-in area near the starting line. You must label these bags with your name to ensure their identity at the finish line area. These bags will be held at the starting line for those running the first two legs of the race (starting line and relay exchange #1), and at the finishing line for the three last legs (relay exchange #2, #3, and #4) and available at the end of your run. A picture ID is required at the time of pickup.
As a safety precaution, backpacks and duffle bags will not be accepted. Do not check any valuables and keep in mind we are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Bags may be claimed after your race. Do not discard gear at the start line. All items left at the start line, on the course or not claimed on race day will be donated to local charities.
Water Stations/Course Support
Keep yourself hydrated! Fully staffed and equipped water stations will be positioned along the course approximately every 2 miles with plenty of water and replenisher liquid. Aid stations will be available at mile markers: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24.
Please help us keep the course clean, by using the provided trash boxes near the aid stations and along the course. This will ensure that this event continues for years to come.
Porta-potties will be available at every relay point on the course (approximately every 5 miles).
Medical resources will be available at each finish line: Half Marathon and Full Marathon finish lines.
Driving Directions to Event (More information posted soon)
The Road to Carthage marathon run will take place rain or shine. If conditions make it unsafe or impossible to have the event, our intent would be to refund entry fees as long as the cancelled event was covered by insurance, otherwise we will transfer your fee to the following year. Our hope is that the weather or any other unforeseen conditions, won’t prevent us from running.
Consistent with the marathon running industry standard, all entry fees are NON-refundable and cannot be deferred toward a future event. Bib numbers are NON- transferable. The selling and/or giving away of a Carthage Marathon bib number is not allowed and will result in disqualification of both the original bib owner and the runner using the bib number. Both runners will be prohibited from participation in the Carthage Marathon for a minimum of two years.
This includes all relay teams.
In recognition of their accomplishment, all relay team finishers will receive a beautiful medal after completing the marathon.
Awards will be offered to the first five finishers of the relay. Prizes, in the way of gift certificates, will also be given to the top 3 finishers of the relay. (click here to see all prizes and awards being offered)
Awards will be given during the post race party, located at the LDS Pageant Building.
If you’re unable to pick up your award on race day, here are two other ways to receive it:
- Pick it up at the Marathon Headquarters (Nauvoo Family Inn and Suites Hotel) through Monday, May 28th.
- After May 28th your award will have to be shipped to you. You must pay the shipping charge of $10.00 for each award being shipped. You can either call us to pay by credit card or send a check payable to Sports In Motion, LLC, mailed to 405 37th Street Place, Sioux City, Iowa 51104.
Please note: age group awards will be based on net chip time and prize money will be based on clock time.
